Songkran in Pattaya.

What to expect at Thailand's biggest water festival, and how to base a group trip around it.

The short version

Songkran is Thailand's New Year festival, and Pattaya is one of the three biggest places in the country to be for it. For three to five days in mid-April, the city runs water fights at scale — Walking Street, the beach road, and every neighbourhood in between. The festival is genuine: it is also, in Pattaya, genuinely enormous.

Most groups base in Jomtien and treat Walking Street as a day trip. The logic is the same logic that makes Jomtien the right side for a Pattaya group trip during quieter times: close enough to be five minutes from anything, far enough that the compound stays calm after 2 AM.

01 · The dates

When is Songkran in Pattaya?

Songkran falls on April 13–15 every year — Thailand's official New Year. Nationally, April 13 is the main day. Pattaya reliably extends the celebration to April 16 or 17, and the city is effectively at festival pitch for all five days. Accommodation is at peak demand throughout; midweek departures are often the easiest to find late.

For groups planning around the festival, the most common configuration is arriving April 11 or 12 (calm), taking the peak three days at full volume, and departing April 16 or 17. That structure gives the group two quiet settling-in days, three festival days, and a departure without the worst of the post-festival airport rush.

02 · Walking Street

What is Songkran on Walking Street actually like?

Walking Street is the main Songkran arena. From late morning through past midnight on the peak days it is a slow-moving river of soaked bodies, water cannons mounted on pickups, hand-held water guns, and buckets of ice water from the bars. The music is loud. The crowd is enormous — 100,000 additional visitors over the core days is a commonly cited figure, and it feels accurate.

The beach road (from Pattaya Beach north) runs a parallel scene, somewhat less intense than Walking Street but still properly wet. Jomtien Beach, three kilometres south, has its own smaller water fights — manageable enough to be enjoyable rather than overwhelming. Most groups do Walking Street on day one or two while energy is high, and Jomtien Beach on the third day when they would rather not fight the crowd.

03 · Villa as base

Why does a private villa work for Songkran?

A hotel during Songkran means a lobby full of wet guests, a pool on reservation, and no quiet corner for the group at 3 AM. A private villa eliminates all three. The compound stays yours — pool when you want it, kitchen if anyone gets hungry at midnight, no front desk between the festival and the bedroom.

The Compound at Villa Azure sleeps 18 across nine bedrooms in Jomtien — five minutes from Walking Street by Grab, but behind a walled gate when the night is done. Two saltwater pools mean the group can run its own water fight on the quieter days without leaving the property. During Songkran week that pool becomes the default afternoon activity while Walking Street recovers from itself.

04 · What to know

What do you need to know before Songkran in Pattaya?

Dress for wet. Light synthetic clothes, waterproof sandals, and a dry bag or waterproof phone case. Nothing linen. Nothing with pockets you care about. Water guns are cheap at any 7-Eleven — 30 to 150 baht depending on the model.

Avoid motorbikes. Road fatalities during Songkran week in Thailand are significantly elevated — drunk driving and wet roads are the main causes. Pre-arrange a driver for the duration or rely on Grab for everything.

Book early. Songkran dates at the right properties in Pattaya go 60–90 days ahead of April 13. If you are reading this in February for an April trip, you still have time. March is the wire.

FAQ

When is Songkran in Pattaya?

Songkran falls on April 13–15 every year — Thailand's official New Year holiday. Pattaya typically extends the celebration to April 16 or 17, and the city is at full volume for all five days. The big water fights on Walking Street and the beach road peak on April 13 and 14.

Is Songkran in Pattaya safe?

The festival itself is safe, but the crowds and the traffic are the real risks. Drunk driving and motorbike accidents spike nationally during Songkran week — avoid renting a motorbike. Use Grab or a pre-arranged driver for any day trips. Walking Street is extremely crowded on peak days; keep your group together and leave valuables at the villa.

What do you wear to Songkran in Pattaya?

Assume you will be completely soaked from the moment you step off the property. Wear light synthetic clothes — linen and cotton take forever to dry and feel awful wet — waterproof sandals or slip-ons, and bring a waterproof phone case. Leave anything you would not want drenched at the villa. Water guns are purchased at 7-Eleven for 30–150 baht.

How busy is Pattaya during Songkran?

Very. Pattaya is one of the two or three biggest Songkran destinations in Thailand — the city can see 100,000 or more additional visitors over the core three days. Hotels and villas booked 60–90 days ahead are the norm. Walking Street becomes a slow-moving crowd from late morning through past midnight on the peak days.

Can you book a villa for Songkran in Pattaya?

Yes, but Songkran dates fill early — typically 60 to 90 days before April 13. A private villa in Jomtien gives the group a quiet base to return to when Walking Street gets overwhelming, a pool to continue the water-fight on your own terms, and no hotel lobby to navigate in soaked clothes. The Compound at Villa Azure sleeps 18 across 9 bedrooms and books out for Songkran most years.

Is Jomtien or Walking Street better for Songkran?

For most groups, Jomtien is the better base and Walking Street is the destination. Jomtien has its own beach water fights on the main days, but the scale is smaller and the crowd is manageable. You are five minutes from Walking Street by Grab — close enough to dip in and out, far enough that the nights stay quiet when you want them to.
